THE NEW EXHIBITION DEDICATED TO THE WORK OF PETER LINDBERGH<\/strong><\/p>\n

Giorgio Armani is pleased to announce a new exhibition at Armani\/Silos, dedicated to the work of Peter Lindbergh. Entitled “Heimat. A sense of belonging”, which will present a vast selection of Peter Lindbergh’s work, spanning several decades of published and unpublished work. <\/p>\n

The exhibition opens on February 22, coinciding with Milan Fashion Week, and runs until August 2.<\/p>\n

Personally curated by Giorgio Armani with the Peter Lindbergh Foundation, the exhibition pays tribute to the powerful affinities between two visionaries whose unique sense of identity set very personal standards, both in art and in life. Giorgio Armani and Peter Lindbergh shared values that permeated their respective aesthetics. An appreciation for the truth of the soul and a quest for honesty as opposed to artifice, in particular, have made them close collaborators since the early 80s and throughout their careers. <\/p>\n

Focusing on well-known and lesser-known aspects of Lindbergh’s work, “Heimat. A sense of belonging” unfolds as a three-section movement on the first floor of Armani\/Silos. The photographer’s unique point of view, his idea of space and beauty and his unmistakable aesthetic are revealed, along with sources of inspiration, in a journey that goes beyond the idea of fashion photography, starting with the portraits of The Naked Truth, heightened by the powerful atmospheres of Heimat, combined with the surprising rawness of The Modern Heroine. <\/p>\n

Lindbergh’s understanding of femininity, his interest in personality and his propensity for truthfulness have always set him apart from his peers. There is an honesty inherent in Lindbergh’s work that is closely linked to his own Heimat. The word heimat, in German, means more than home: it’s a place of the heart; where one belongs. For Lindbergh, heimat was the industrial backdrop of Duisburg, with its factories, fog, metal and concrete. The Berlin aesthetic of the 1920s was another indelible imprint. Through the filter of a soulful eye, these sources engendered a sense of raw beauty that marks the photographer’s entire oeuvre. <\/p>\n

The heart of the Armani\/Silos exhibition revolves around images in which the expressive industrial environment is more than mere background: it is a narrative protagonist, as beautifully naked in their truth as Lindbergh’s portraits, always stripped of artifice, and his idea of the modern heroine as a powerful woman who shows signs of age and the passing of time with pride. In all three movements, Heimat. A sense of belonging describes the complexity and directness of Lindbergh’s work, and his sense of timelessness. <\/p>\n

\n“I’ve always admired Peter for the consistency and intensity of his work. Timelessness is a quality I personally aspire to, and one that Peter certainly possessed. With this exhibition at Armani\/Silos, I want to pay tribute to a wonderful professional companion whose love of beauty represents an indelible contribution to our culture, and not just to fashion,” says Giorgio Armani.<\/p>\n

Known for his cinematic images, Peter Lindbergh (1944-2019) was born in Leszno, Poland, and spent his childhood in Duisburg (North Rhine-Westphalia). He studied fine art in Berlin and free-lance painting in Krefeld, turning his interest to photography after moving to Dusseldorf in 1971. Joining the Stern magazine family with photographic legends such as Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin and Hans Feurer, he moved to Paris in 1978 to pursue his career. Lindbergh quickly introduced a form of new realism, prioritizing the soul and personality of subjects, changing the norms of fashion photography for good, moving away from age and beauty stereotypes. His work is best known for its simple, revealing portraits, and the strong influences of early German cinema and the industrial environment of his childhood. <\/p>\n

Since the late 1970s, Peter Lindbergh has collaborated with prestigious magazines, including American and Italian Vogue, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar US, Wall Street Journal Magazine, Visionaire, Interview and W. He has photographed three Pirelli calendars, in 1996, 2002 and 2017 respectively, and his work is featured in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Centre Pompidou (Paris), MoMA PS1 (New York). He has also had solo exhibitions at Hamburger Banhof (Berlin), Bunkamura Art Museum (Tokyo), Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts (Moscow) Kunsthal Rotterdam, Kunsthalle Denchen, Reggia di Venaria (Turin) and Kunstpalast Dusseldorf. <\/p>\n

Peter Lindbergh has directed a number of critically acclaimed films and documentaries: Models, The Film (1991); Inner Voices (1999) won the Best Documentary Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2000; Pina Bausch, Der Fensterputzer (2001) and Everywhere at Once (2007), which was narrated by Jeanne Moreau and presented at the Cannes and Tribeca Festivals.<\/p>\n
