Extramarital affairs are not just a matter for politicians and celebrities: the practice is spreading and becoming commonplace in our society. <\/p>\n<p>804 French people over the age of 18, took part in this survey, published on Tuesday January 21, 2014. A survey conducted over the Internet to preserve anonymity and observe changes in French people&#8217;s sexual behavior. Ifop is collaborating with the Gleeden website, specialized in extramarital dating.  <\/p>\n<p>The number of French people who have been unfaithful at least once in their lives has risen steadily over the past 40 years. While only 19% were unfaithful in 1970, the percentage has now risen to 43%. 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women admit to having had affairs. The Internet and new means of communication may explain this upward trend. Dating opportunities are becoming easier and easier. By consensus, infidelity is defined as any physical contact. Thus, 2 out of 3 women believe that kissing is cheating.      <\/p>\n<p>But infidelity differs according to age, gender and socio-professional category. Indeed, those voting left are more unfaithful (46%) than those voting right (40%). What&#8217;s more, it&#8217;s the oldest men (66% of over-50s) and the most affluent (53% of CSP+) who have experience of extramarital relationships.  <\/p>\n<p>Despite this, 68% of French people still think it&#8217;s possible to remain faithful for life. The rise of extramarital affairs does not go hand in hand with an acceptance of this behavior.
