About a year ago, when Rolls-Royce presented 103EX to the world, the company evoked its heritage as a coachbuilder to inspire its future clientele. This Visionary Vehicle imagined a luxurious world of fully customizable mobility where new technologies would enable every Rolls Royce to be built in the image of its owners, if they so wished. Such a Rolls-Royce would become the ultimate material embodiment of luxury: a personal, bespoke vehicle, unique to each owner who ordered one.
\nThe mere idea of a modern Rolls Royce body wasn’t enough for a connoisseur of the brand. He approached the brand with his own idea of a Rolls Royce two-seater that he wanted to create here and now. The result was the “Sweptail”. In a nod to the Rolls Royces “swept-tail” of the 1920s, so admired by the customer, he asked Rolls Royce to reinvent this feature for his exceptional car. <\/p>\n

On the occasion of the car’s presentation to the media at the Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este on May 27, 2017, Torsten M\u00fbller-\u00d6tv\u00f6s, Chairman and CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars said, “Sweptail is a truly magnificent car. It represents the desire to travel for oneself and immediately propels the “Sweptail” into the pantheon of intercontinental touring cars. Rolls Royce’s history as the world’s first coachbuilder is at the heart of its identity as the world’s leading luxury brand. The arrival of the 103EX lit up Rolls Royce’s future in this field, and Sweptail today is proof that Rolls Royce remains the number one manufacturer. We’re listening to our most special customers and assessing their interest in investing in similar, exclusive masterpieces. We are currently investigating the resources that will enable us to offer this unique service to other demanding customers”. <\/p>\n

Sweptail – How the idea became reality<\/strong>
\n“Sweptail is the automotive equivalent of Haute Couture,” comments Giles Taylor, Design Director at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “It’s a Rolls-Royce tailor-made to fit a specific customer. That customer came to the House of Rolls-Royce with their idea, shared with the creative process where we advised them on the fabric and then tailored it to their desires. You could say they were cut from the same cloth.”
\nInspired by the magnificent Rolls Royce bodywork of the 1920s to 1930s, the customer wanted a two-seater with a cutaway body topped by a substantial panoramic glass roof. And as a Rolls Royce connoisseur, he was inspired by many of his favorite cars from the brand’s golden age of the early 20th century, as well as by many classic and modern yachts.
\nFor many years, Taylor and his design team collaborated with the customer on a wonderful intellectual journey, working together to bring the customer’s precise idea to life. And the result of this exceptional coachbuilding project is the incomparable Rolls-Royce Sweptail. <\/p>\n

Sweptail’ – A unique idea<\/strong>
\nThe ‘Sweptail’ is undoubtedly a Rolls-Royce that matches the brand’s DNA. First of all, we’re drawn to the bold, massive front profile, centered on a new version of the iconic “Pantheon” grille. The largest of its kind in the modern Rolls-Royce era, the grille is first fabricated from a billet of aluminum alloy before being meticulously hand-polished to a mirror-like finish. The end of the Sweptail’s front end is also framed in brushed aluminum.
\nMoving around the “Sweptail” reveals the impressive silhouette that defines its singular character. By softening the previously rather straight and formal front, the lines of the “Sweptail” are transformed into a more elegant and less rigid form. The result is a true coupe in stature and magnificence. From the front edge of the windshield, the roofline sweeps forward as the taillights slope towards the rear of the vehicle, overhanging the edge of the boot lid to emphasize its depth.
\nThe final touch at the rear resonates as a tribute to the yachts that inspired the customer, with its accentuation towards the lower bumper. Viewed from the rear, the posterior contrasts sharply with the front of the car, shaping a completely different perception of a spectacular Rolls-Royce Coup\u00e9.
\nAnd to complete the sleek rear of this unique car, its registration number: 08. Two digits made from hand-polished aluminum ingots. <\/p>\n

Royal yet modern interior<\/strong>
\nThe elegance and grandeur of the bodywork seen in profile, the elongated side windows and the panoramic glass roof combine to illuminate this Rolls-Royce’s two unique passengers and its minimalist, modern, hand-crafted interior.
\nAnd what a beautiful place to watch the world go by behind the large windows and roof. The interior is imbued with a simplistic, minimalist philosophy that reduces components and purifies the whole.
\nLarge quantities of polished Macassar Ebony and Paldao fibers adorn the interior, creating various contrasts and visual effects for the owner, both classic and contemporary. This contrasts with the lightness of the Mocasson and DarkSpice leathers adorning the seats, armrests and top of the dashboard.
\nTrue to the spirit of a transcontinental GT that Rolls-Royce designed in the 20s and 30s, in place of the rear seats, a vast expanse of wood acts as a shelf with an illuminated glass rest. Just below the backlighting of the rear opening through which it can be accessed, the hat shelf stands on its own, shiny and equipped with luggage slides.
\nBehind the passengers, a feature called the Passerelle flows from the rear edge of the windscreen like a teardrop, connecting to the hat shelf and thus marrying all the interior volumes.
\nThis is the most uncluttered dashboard in Rolls-Royce history to date. Not only does the minimalist styling impose the appearance of a single control unit, while all the others have been discreetly relocated, but the clock also fits in perfectly. In a world first, the appearance of this Rolls-Royce clock is also hand-crafted from the finest Macassar veneer, visually incorporating the clock into this panel, highlighted by perfectly machined titanium hands. This use of titanium then extends to the three hand-assembled instrument dials.
\nTwo ultimate surprises and superb features have been secretly inserted inside the Sweptail.
\nConcealed in the doors on either side of the car, behind the door opening, are two identical saddlebags: they contain two handheld attach\u00e9 cases that deploy at the touch of a button.
\nThese attach\u00e9 cases are part of the complete luggage collection also developed by Rolls-Royce Bespoke for the “Sweptail”.
\nThe finishing touch to this unique work of art is as personal to the owner as all the other features of the “Sweptail”. The entire center console now houses a hand-crafted mechanism that accommodates a bottle of champagne from the customer’s favorite brand, as well as two crystal flutes.
\nA more personal Rolls-Royce, crafted for a specific customer, since every aspect of the material treatment evokes the quality of the handmade and brings attention to detail. In other words, this is a Rolls-Royce like no other. <\/p>\n
