Uomo Vogue transfigured Sotheby’s at an auction on January 19, 2012. The extraordinary and exciting magazine has decided to support a Unesco educational project. Franca Sozzani, the magazine’s director for the past five years, has been appointed ambassador for the Fashion 4 Development project. This project, created by Bibi Russel and Unesco in 1996, promotes women’s independence through fashion-related initiatives, particularly in developing countries.

\nHere, some of the exceptional shots that made up the covers of the famous magazine were offered for sale. In the first part of the evening, the images were displayed for the guests to see. Then the auction began. The latter gave a glimpse of the dexterity and delicate humor of Filippo Lotti, the auctioneer and director of Sotheby’s Milan.

\nSome lots fetched substantial sales prices. The public’s enthusiasm varied according to the photographer’s talent, the model’s celebrity and the circumstances of the shoot. The majority of works sold for between 2,000 and 3,000 euros. Some were even more successful. The photograph of Al Gore, dated November 2007, when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, fetched 5,500 euros. The portrait of Michael Jackson, lot 23, was taken on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Thriller album. At that moment, the singer had not been officially photographed for 15 years. Bruce Weber captured an attitude, an emotion. His artistic performance was valued at 7,500 euros.

\nWhether it’s the personality of Keith Richards or the work of Francesco Carrozzini, lot 29 was an unparalleled success. One buyer estimated it at 10,000 euros. A real frenzy ran through the room when it was presented.
