The Finnish Institute presents an exhibition dedicated to Caj Bremer, one of the great names in post-war Finnish photojournalism. From Helsinki and its bourgeois lifestyle to remote regions untouched by modernism, nothing escaped Caj Bremer’s lens. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Born in Helsinki in 1929, Caj Bremer has been associated with the tradition of humanist photography right from the start of his career. This movement, notably represented by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Doisneau in France, focuses on man and his immediate environment, with great respect for the subjects and a certain lyrical beauty, even if the austerity of everyday life is very much present. <\/p>\n

Caj Bremer’s eye is attentive. Even in changing situations, his ability to master composition and light remains sure-footed. He succeeds in capturing the essence of a scene, producing a seemingly simple image, often tinged with a good-natured sense of humor. And it’s precisely this warm humor that sets Caj Bremer’s images apart. <\/p>\n

A major retrospective of Caj Bremer’s work was organized in 2010 at the Ateneum Museum of Fine Arts in Helsinki. Some forty of the black and white photographs exhibited at the time will be shown at the Finnish Institute. From a prom to a simple shack without a chimney, they illustrate the cultural and social diversity that prevailed in Finland until the early 1970s. <\/p>\n
