\nUnder the artistic direction of Martin Bethenod, the 9th Nuit Blanche is
\ncentered on contemporary visual art in all its diversity of
\nexpressions (sculpture, video, installation, performance…). Focusing on
\nthe relationship between a work of art, a place and an audience, the event welcomes works by
\ninternational artists, while respecting the plurality of genres.
\nHistoric figures such as Michelangelo
\nPistoletto rub shoulders with established artists (Chen Zhen, Claude L\u00e9v\u00eaque, Erik
\nSamakh, Rirkrit Tiravanija…), as well as emerging artists (Keren Cytter, Nicolas
\nMilh\u00e9, Claire Fontaine…) showing the latest trends in contemporary art
\n.
\nFrom Cuban Wilfredo Prieto to the young Korean HeeWon Lee, from Danish
\nJoachim Koester to Chen Zhen, a Chinese artist based in France from 1986 until his death,
\nfrom French C\u00e9leste Boursier-Mougenot to the American-Swiss duo Lang\/
\nBaumann, the artists set up a dialogue beyond borders, the
\ntime of a resolutely transcultural and international Nuit Blanche.
\nTo encourage strolling and wandering, the 2010 edition is structured
\naround three deliberately tightly-spaced areas, with a real focus on
\ndensity.
\n– Western Paris (around the Alma – Trocad\u00e9ro hub and major
\ncultural institutions – Palais de Tokyo, Mus\u00e9e Guimet, Mus\u00e9e d’Art moderne de
\nla Ville de Paris…).
\n– Central Paris (around the islands of Saint-Louis, Cit\u00e9 and Marais).
\n– And finally, the east of Paris (around the Belleville district, at the heart of a
\ncreative bubbling supported by the emergence of young galleries, but also
\nby this year’s first Belleville Biennial).
\nThese three areas are linked throughout the night by lines 9 and 14
\nof the metro, which also becomes a stage for artistic creation (Dominique
\nBlais on line 14; EnsAD at the ghostly Saint-Martin station, line 9),
\nthanks to a renewed partnership with RATP.
\nEach of the capital’s flagship zones is populated with demanding and astonishing
\nartistic proposals which, close to one another,
\nconstitute pedestrian-scale itineraries. Nuit Blanche
\nis built on an intimate relationship with the city, art and the night.
\nThis 9th edition brings together a large number of art and cultural venues (museums,
\nmonuments, foreign cultural centers, theaters, etc.), as well as
\nsquares, squares and gardens, administrative buildings, sports centers,
\nleisure or educational centers, hospitals or places of worship…
\nIn addition to specific
\nproductions, the exhibition also features numerous works belonging to public or private
\ncollections (Fonds national d’art contemporain, Fonds r\u00e9gional
\nd’art contemporain \u00cele-de-France, Fonds municipal d’art contemporain,
\ncollection agn\u00e8s b…) never or rarely shown. Tino
\n‘s performance Sehgal Kiss, 2004, belonging to the FNAC, is reactivated at the \u00c9cole
\nnationale sup\u00e9rieure des Beaux-Arts; Cerith Wyn Evans’ La part
\nmaudite par Georges Bataille (1949), 2005, recently acquired by the Mus\u00e9e
\nd’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, is presented in the garden of the Mus\u00e9e
\nGalliera, while Claude L\u00e9v\u00eaque’s Mon repos aux Tuileries, 2007, belonging
\nto the Fonds municipal d’art contemporain, takes up residence in the
\nBelleville park. In co-production with the Berlin Biennale, the work of Austrian artist
\nHans Schabus makes a striking appearance in the courtyard of the Biblioth\u00e8que
\nHistorique de la Ville de Paris.
\nAmong the highlights of Nuit Blanche 2010, the work of Thierry Dreyfus
\nfor Notre-Dame or that of the young artist Hakima El Djoudi, both
\nproduced for Nuit Blanche; the parade organized by Rirkrit Tiravanija in
\ncollaboration with musician Arto Lindsay; the reactivation of works
\nby Erik Samakh at H\u00f4tel-Dieu, by Lang\/Baumann at
\nBelleville elementary school or by Michelangelo Pistoletto on the fa\u00e7ade of the H\u00f4tel de Ville
\nare sure to leave their mark.
\nPreferring the intimate to the spectacular, the sparkle to the glare of
\nspotlights, this 9th edition gives way to the mystery that gradually emerges,
\nto poetry and commitment.<\/p>\n
