Named for its ocean-like hues, the Bulgari Laguna Blu Diamond is a gem like no other. Set in a ring by the Roman jewelry house Bulgari in 1970, this blue diamond is a testament to the era when Bulgari began to revolutionize the world of fine jewelry, thanks to bold chromatic combinations, designs inspired by Roman artistic and architectural heritage and an affinity with Hollywood glamour. <\/p>\n
The Bulgari Laguna Blu is rare in three ways. First, as an 11.16-carat vivid blue diamond, it is one of the few diamonds of this color and size. Blue diamonds, produced by the fortuitous presence of boron in the diamond’s carbon structure, are among the rarest in the world. Fewer than ten vivid blue diamonds over 10 carats have been auctioned in the last 50 years, four of which were sold by Sotheby’s. <\/p>\n
Secondly, the Bulgari Laguna Blu is Bulgari’s signature work, designed in 1970 during the jewelry house’s heyday, a period marked by the affection of Hollywood stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren for Bulgari jewelry.<\/p>\n
Finally, the Bulgari Laguna Blu has remained in the same family since its acquisition in the 1970s, making it a rarely seen treasure. What’s more, it has remained unmodified, despite technological advances in diamond cutting. <\/p>\n
After dazzling audiences at the Met Gala, the Bulgari Laguna Blu Diamond will be on display at Geneva’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel from May 11, before being offered for sale during Sotheby’s Luxury Week in Geneva. It is part of a larger collection that also includes two other white diamonds signed Bulgari, dating from the same period. <\/p>\n
