MR. SATURDAY FALL/WINTER 2022 DIGITAL PRESENTATION

PARIS FASHION WEEK

“Radio On”

Creative Direction: Joey Gollish

March 9, 2022

New York, NY

Toronto-based designer brand Mr. Saturday presented its Fall/Winter 2022 collection titled “Radio On” on March 9, 2022 with a short film and interactive lookbook, debuting on the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode’s official Paris Fashion Week platform, as well as on Mr. Saturday’s website. A brand that looks at the past to connect it to our present and reflect on the future, Mr. Saturday’s Founder and Creative Director Joey Gollish studies historical events and stories, focusing on nightlife and culture-shifting moments, to explore how lesser known works or one night decades ago can go on to have a profound impact on the world around us today. This season, Gollish researched Kraftwerk, the German band and pioneer of electronic music, and references the band and its influence on art, music, performance, and culture for the Fall/Winter 2022 collection of retro-futuristic, Americana-inspired apparel and all new accessories.

“‘Radio On’ feels like a return to the roots of Mr. Saturday. Sound has always been an important element of our projects, so centering this season on Kraftwerk and their influences was incredibly eye opening. I think we’re all children of Kraftwerk and Bauhaus, even more so than you’d think. This collection is about closing the loop of Kraftwerk references and expressing their language of ‘Retro-Futuristic-Americana’ that feels close to home for me,” designer Joey Gollish said.

Mr. Saturday’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection features 34 ready-to-wear looks across both menswear and womenswear. This season, Gollish continues to push Mr. Saturday forward – leaning into signature brand elements like oversized silhouettes, androgenous styling, custom graphics, upcycled fabrics, and circular branding (a play on the Mr. Saturday logo which features 7 circles for each day of the week) to create a modern, elevated collection that feels familiar. “This collection really explores the world of Mr. Saturday through tailoring, object labeling, an expanded range of categories, and our circular branding. It felt important to further establish our visual language in my fifth collection,” says Gollish.

Key looks from the menswear range tie in classic Americana silhouettes and references, including a whiskey-colored leather trench coat, a black padded leather moto jacket, a black tailored trench coat with inside-out seams, a checkerboard sherpa coat with circular detailing on the back, a gray double breasted suit with elongated pant hems for a train-like effect.

For womenswear, key looks include a high collar black evening gown with an exaggerated train and a sheer turtleneck tube dress with matching sleeves in red, black, and gray colorways. Seen throughout the collection are various brushed yarn knitwear styles designed to be mixed and layered with, black leather pants with cinched detailing, a bomber jacket with dolman sleeves and circular detailing on the back in nylon, leather, and denim fabrics, and tailored trousers with elongated hems for a train-like effect. Mr. Saturday also incorporates its signature graphics into “Radio On” with artwork this season made in collaboration with New York-based artist Rueben Burgess Jr.. Burgess Jr.’s work appears throughout the collection on graphic t-shirt and hoodie styles, various tank tops and long sleeves, and balaclavas along with hand-painted artwork appearing on the collection’s « gallery » items like the white poplin button ups.

Mr. Saturday expanded its accessories offering this season with new, premium styles across sunglasses, handbags, footwear, and cold weather categories. For sunglasses, the brand presented three distinct styles including the ‘Das Model’, a retro futuristic-inspired silhouette handcrafted with Italian acetate. Footwear this season was shaped by Americana influences and includes the “Wayne” an exaggerated Western-style boot made from molded rubber, the “Seven” a platform sole boot in two cream and black leather colorways with zipper closure up the middle, and various creeper styles returning from past seasons. Cold weather accessories include brushed knit balaclavas and oversized blanket scarves complete with circular Mr. Saturday branding. For handbags, Mr. Saturday debuted new tote styles alongside The Patricia and The Clara – two handbags that have become signature to the brand. The Patricia is Mr. Saturday’s take on a classic handbag with circular elements redacted from the top and bottom and made with crocodile embossed leather. The Clara, a circular, structured tote bag in calf’s leather, with an oversized handle and logo embossed on the front.

“Radio On” also includes a collaboration with Canadian premium lifestyle brand Roots. Gollish worked closely with the brand to create various leather accessories as well as an award jacket, inspired by varsity styled jackets.

“Growing up in Canada, Roots has always been a symbol of Canadian heritage and craftsmanship. When I was first invited to their factory, I was blown away by the level of quality and detail – it felt like I was in the factory of a European luxury house. Roots is famous for their Award Jacket, which they’ve made for everyone from professional athletes, to The Weeknd, to politicians. Taking this classic style and bringing it into the world of Mr. Saturday felt like a natural choice. We also paired this with leather goods from weekender bags to smaller accessories. To me the collaboration truly feels like new Canadian luxury.”

Mr. Saturday presented “Radio On” with a short film and interactive lookbook primarily shot on iPhone, replacing the traditional digital runway presentation with a series of vignette videos that capture the details of the brand’s fifth collection and create a new experience within the Mr. Saturday world. In addition to the Fédération’s Paris Fashion Week streaming platform, “Radio On” is available to view digitally on Mr. Saturday’s “Gallery” page – a custom built platform that allows viewers to interact with the lookbook and dive deeper into the collection and it’s references.
