VIKTOR&ROLF COUTURE SPRING/SUMMER 2020

PATCHWORKS

Loosely inspired by Viktor&Rolf’s childhood memories of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s ‘Little House on the Prairie’ and Denise Holly Hobbie-Ulinskas’ eponymous ’70’s illustration character, Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2020 has an air of soft poetry and innocent romance.

Having nearly exhausted their stock on their previous upcycling couture shows, Viktor&Rolf turned to their archive of fabric samples: tiny pieces of fabric, sent to the House throughout the years for consideration during the development process of their collections. From this archive, Viktor&Rolf selected some of the most luxurious fabric samples that, patched together, make up this collection.

Historically, the technique of patchwork originated from frugal necessity: old clothes were cut up in patches and sewn back together in decorative patterns, in order to be used again. By reusing their high-end couture fabric samples in this way, Viktor&Rolf create a surreal paradox that underlines the beauty of imperfection. This collection highlights the creative principle of conscious design. Doing more with less; constraints providing a steppingstone for meaningful creation. Previous Haute Couture collections (such as Vagabonds, Action Dolls and Spiritual Glamour) made use of Viktor&Rolf’s archive of stock fabrics, oftentimes dating back 20 to 25 years.

The collection shows a series of voluminous, free-flowing dresses and capes, embellished with tiers, ruffles, and crochet galloons. Ranging from floor-length to calf to ultra-mini, several outfits are complemented with wide-brimmed, spontaneously shaped surreal hats. Elaborate glamorous make- up is juxtaposed with faux tattoos, proclaiming messages of love and happiness.

Jiwinaia’s statement earrings complement the couture dresses.

Melissa shoes and bags – crafted from vegan recyclable plastic – complete this season’s look in a variety of pastel tones. Melissa’s iconic jelly shoe and the wicker bag silhouette are reimagined with romantic yet bold Broderie Anglaise lace detailing.

After the show, a limited and exclusive selection of the Melissa/ Viktor&Rolf collaboration is available as a ’See Now Buy Now’ on Viktor&Rolf’s online concept store.
