PHILIPP PLEIN SHOWCASES RESORT 2019 COLLECTION IN CANNES

For his Resort 2019 collection, Philipp Plein once again opened the gates to his private palace on the Cote d’Azur, ‘La Jungle Du Roi’. At the entrance, on a wall of white roses, the word ‘PHILIPP PLEIN DYNASTY’ was framed by two giant ‘Ziggy Stardust’ lightning bolts – signaling an event charged with high-voltage power. The runway created in gold glitter was surrounded by the exotic garden’s palm and banana trees. The show began with David Bowie’s Rebel Rebel pounding through the speakers …

Inspired by the iconic 1980s TV drama Dynasty, this season the Plein woman exudes all the brazen attitude of Alexis Colby with an injection of glam-rock. Bright-coloured 70’s style hair and glitter nails, she is a force to be reckoned with: strong and sexy in sequin suits, palm-leaf embellished bombers and hoodies, studded denim mini-skirts, skin-tight leather trousers, carrying a transparent PVC bag and wearing metallic skull stilettoes.

Holding their own next to these goddesses, the men are equally bold. Whether bare-chested like Dynasty hunks or dressed in dollar-bill print shirts and suits, turquoise tailored python biker jackets, sequined shawl-collared tuxedos and embellished cowboy hats, these are fun-loving characters who also mean business.

Elsewhere, there is a new women’s focus on elegant, sophisticated eveningwear: a capsule collection of ultra-luxe gowns for exclusive red-carpet events. True to the rock’n’roll spirit of Philipp Plein, there are large leopard prints, python-style sequinning, a biker jacket ball gown along with flowing chiffon and lace bodices. From coiffured head to high-heeled toe, it’s a statement of strength and allure.

Reflecting the natural surroundings of the Plein villa, the collection also has a softer, more romantic side with floral patterns decorating denim dungarees, military-style jackets and silk flared trousers. Looser shapes and fuller volumes give a fluid, relaxed 70’s feel, revealing a quieter confidence.
