How was your passion for cinema born? When you were younger, didn’t you want to become a boxer?
More of a fantasy than a real will… like girls for dancing or boys for soccer… I was boxing and I wanted to become world champion. I started very young, my real desire was always to play but I didn’t admit it to myself. And I’ve been lucky for 23 years to have work all the time. Living from your passion is just great!

You are considered as the new darling of the French cinema, how do you take it?
I am delighted because for me it means more work, more choices, however it is dangerous. We live in a consumer society, and I don’t want to be considered as a disposable product. I don’t feel fashionable, I prefer to be able to age with the public.

When you started, did you imagine you would be at the top of the bill?
I was born in this business, so I wasn’t as naive as a beginner. I discovered the injustice of this environment. I never thought I would become a star. That said, I was a bit of a jerk… to be very honest, at first I was… when I was cast in Outlaw… but it didn’t last long. It’s not a star job, it’s a status, a bit like intermittent…

Is this how you choose your characters? You go from one to the other with a disconcerting ease.
I love playing different characters. I’m flattered that people can be impressed by my work. As it is my passion, it is natural. It’s like asking a Chinese child how he speaks this complex language. I want to go everywhere. I prefer to avoid confining myself to one genre. But again, I don’t have the keys in hand. That’s why I try to vary the pleasures and I make my decisions according to the roles I’m offered.

Do you think that independent cinema is in danger in France?
It has always been. The cinema is a micro-society which is only the reflection of our society. Since the beginning, it has allowed some people to make art, to reflect on the world, but it remains an industry held by industrialists. That said, popular cinema also brings a reflection, La Grande vadrouille is a convincing example.

Me encanta interpretar a diferentes personajes. Quiero ir a todas partes.
